Thanksgiving Break Recap

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Jon and I got back from our 10 day trip through Texas onto Alabama and back to Oklahoma.  We stopped in Dallas for a few days before we headed to Alabama for Thanksgiving.

While in Dallas, we celebrated sweet little Gabbi's first birthday.  It was a great party for all...especially Gabbi, who had the best time ripping the wrapping paper off of her gifts.  She even made little grunt noises.  It was too cute.

We headed out to Alabama on Monday morning and had a pretty pleasant drive aside from one stop on the interstate where Remington got to enjoy the scenery for a bit.

My sister and I experienced our first Iron Bowl married to Auburn men.  Even though we lost, it was still a good game, and no one killed each other while watching.  :)  Here we are sporting our crimson.  Roll tide!

I was in the organizing/purging mood (as usual) and convinced my sister to help me clean out my mom's attic.  Although it was a full day of work, we enjoyed going through all of our old baby dolls, toys and stuffed animals.  There were a lot of "Hey look!  Remember this?!" moments.

We were able to donate 4 garbage bags of stuffed animals and 5 other bags of miscellaneous stuff when all was said and done.  I found a few treats that I got to bring home too, including these vintage mini ornaments my mom had as a child.  Aren't they beautiful?

Now that we're home, I'm back to Christmas decorating.  I will have pictures to you by the end of the week.  And.... drumroll please..... we're getting a tree!  One of our sweet friends is letting us borrow their truck tonight so we can pick one out and bring it home.  I'm so excited!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thankful

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Happy 7 month anniversary to us!
We're enjoying it by spending time with friends and family in Alabama this Thanksgiving week.  We have so much to be thankful for this year and always, and to celebrate that, we're going to start a new tradition--a journal of thanksgiving.  In this journal, we'll write what we're thankful for on this Thanksgiving.  And each Thanksgiving after, we'll add to it.  I think it's a necessary and important to stop and realize just how blessed we all are.  And in years to come, we'll be able to look back on the pages of this book and remember all of our many blessings.

Happy early Thanksgiving to you all!

Birthday Picture Book

Friday, November 19, 2010

Tomorrow Jon and I are going to our good friends' little girl's 1st birthday in Dallas.  It is a garden themed party, and I've heard about and seen some of the decorations and party ideas and know it will be absolutely adorable affair.

Birthdays are a big deal.  It's amazing to see just how much a child can grow in a year.  The people of marthastewart.com must have thought they same thing because they came up with this great idea.

Use a scrapbook or album to hold pictures of your child posing on his/her birthday each year.   The kids can decorate their own signs showing the age they're turning (except when they're really young of course).  Eventually, you'll have a book full of photos documenting their birthdays and growth over the years.  It is recommended that you have your child stand so you can noticeably see their growth.  It's such a cute tradition and easy to do keepsake!

I'll definitely be making one for my kids in the future!

Deck the Halls Inspiration

Thursday, November 18, 2010

It was a cold and rainy day here in Oklahoma yesterday, which made it the perfect day for starting to put up my Christmas decorations.  Now before you call me crazy, let me just say I'm not overshadowing Thanksgiving.  We are leaving town tomorrow and won't be back until after Thanksgiving.  So technically we won't be celebrating Thanksgiving with Christmas decor around us.  But now, when we return home, we'll be all set to enjoy the three weeks of our Christmas decor we have before we head out again for two weeks for the holidays.

That brings up another issue.

If you were to look at our DVR recordings, you would see shows like Inside the Milky Way and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills--about as diverse as they come.  I'm sure you can guess which one is mine (sorry, it's a guilty pleasure).  Well about as much as we differ on our entertainment choices, we also differ on our thoughts on whether or not to buy a Christmas tree this year.

As I mentioned earlier, we will only be home to enjoy our Christmas decorations for 3 weeks.  No, it isn't the longest time, but I grew up always having a real Christmas tree, and I always got to help pick it out.  Needless to say, I've always dreamed of having one of my own in my very first home.  So naturally, I say we need to get a tree!  Jon, on the other hand, thinks it's silly since we won't even been here to enjoy it.  (He's usually the rational one while I'm the dreamer.)  I have a feeling I will be able to persuade him though.  At least that's what I'm hoping since I already got the Christmas tree stand and all of the ornaments and lights down yesterday :)

I'm not completely done with the rest of decorations so I won't share any pictures yet, but I'd thought I'd show you a few of the inspirations for my decor.

I love the archway we have between our living room and dining room, and I think it's just screaming for some garland, on which we'll attach the Christmas cards we receive, which are free and festive!

Next up is adding a little seasonal touch to the china cabinet.  As I've mentioned before, I have a thing for black and white stripes.  Well I also happen to have a thing for wreaths hung by ribbons.  I'm hoping I can find some similar ribbon to this to use (for now it's just resting on the cabinet knobs) because I'm in love with it.

As I said, I have a thing for wreaths hung up by ribbons, especially when they're hanging on windows.  You can bet you'll be seeing some wreaths on our large window in the living room.  I hung them up last night, and they look great.

I don't currently own a tree skirt.  I've never found one I've been too crazy about, and they are all usually so darn expensive.  So since I'm going for a rustic elegance look, I think this burlap idea will be perfect, not to mention simple and affordable.   All you have to do is buy a yard of burlap at your local craft store and cut out any edge you want.  You can add piece of felt on top if you want the layered look.

I purchased this chartreuse velvet and linen Pottery Barn runner on major sale ($13!) after Christmas last year, and I have to say it looks fabulous on our dining room table.  It works so well with all our existing decor and showcases the green glass goblets (say that three times fast) that my mom handed down to me.  We're definitely going to have to invite some people over for dinner!

So there's just a tease.  I'll be back soon with the final photos soon.

Lauren Liess Home-Before and Afters

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

I'll spare you some more Christmas talk (I'll get back to that tomorrow).  But for today, I want to show you some before and after photos of the home of designer Lauren Liess of Washington, D.C.

Let me preface this by saying that Lauren and her husband bought a home that had been sitting on the market for nearly 4 years.  It was built in the 70's and everyone (including their realtor) told them to steer clear.  But lucky for us, they didn't, and the transformation is astounding.

First up is the kitchen.

Here is the before...

And here is the after...
Lauren and her husband installed new walnut-finish elm flooring, added an open island from ikea, put up white beaded board, hung a flea market chandelier, painted the lower cabinets and replaced the top cabinets with open shelving.  Quite the change, huh?  And because they didn't have to buy new cabinets, they saved a ton.  I've always adored open shelving and after seeing this transformation, I might just have to put up some of my own in our next place.

Next up is the dining room.

Here it is before...

And here it is after...
New furniture (those parson chairs look awfully similar to mine shown here), curtains, table cloth (chartreuse is one of my favorite colors), chandelier and blown up 15th Century drawing (excellent idea) make this room complete.

And last but not least, I wanted to show you her entry way.

Here it is before...bland and dated.

And here it is after...
A new coat of paint, framed sketches taken from a Leonardo da Vinci book, lantern chandelier and orange door truly make this an entrance.

For more photos of her home and portfolio, head over to her blog.

Christmas Cards

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

I ordered our Christmas cards today!  I can't wait to get them and start sending them out!  It's our first Christmas as a family, and I am beyond excited to celebrate it with my loves.  Here is our first Christmas card, designed by Lily Pad Boutique.  Lily Pad has a ton of adorable stuff and can make you any custom design you can dream of!  You should check them out!
I'm sad I didn't have Remington in our photo (he wasn't around yet), but I really wanted to celebrate the fact that it is our first Christmas as husband and wife :)

In other Christmas news, I ordered these boxwood mini wreaths for our dining room chairs today.  They were already a little on sale, and I had another coupon.  Victory.  I hope they turn out as cute as they look here!

Shopping Advice

My latest issue of Lucky magazine had a 10th Anniversary special on 100 edicts to live by.  I circled a few of my favorite shopping tips and thought I'd share the advise with you.

1. Don't shop for clothes when you're tan, thin or in the Bahamas because everything looks good when you're tan, thin and in the Bahamas.
2.  Buy clothes that you'll wear on a Tuesday afternoon, not a Saturday night--few people lead Saturday-night lives.
3.  Avoid being featured on Hoarders by living the "one in, one out" mantra:  If you buy something new, take something else out and set it on eBay or donate it.  Another good tip for the Closet Declutter post from yesterday.
4.  If something is expensive, leave it behind for 24 hours.  If you're still obsessed with it the next day, buy it.
5.  If shoes are only marginally comfortable when you try them on in the store you can be sure they'll be excruciating on the street.

Closet Declutter

Monday, November 15, 2010

One of the perks to having a smaller home with limited storage is that you have to switch out the clothes  in your closet every season.  This might not sound like a perk to many of you, and honestly, I didn't for me either initially, but it has proven to be a wonderful thing.

For one, it makes me reevaluate everything I own every few months.  I have to figure out what I really want to keep, what I don't wear and what I don't need, thus eliminating a lot of things that were just taking up space before and that can better serve someone else.  It also helps me remember what I have.  When you have a closet big enough to allow you to keep piling things in it, things get pushed to the back and forgotten about.  Not so with my clothes.

Another great thing about changing out your closet each season is that it keeps you organized.  Because there is a complete overhaul four times a year, four times a year everything gets nicely repositioned and reorganized.  It also allows you reevaluate your current organization system and change up things that aren't working and build off things that are, making my closet more efficient every time.

No, this isn't my closet (a girl can dream), but it is a great example of how beautiful and organized a closet can be.  Even if your closet is big enough for you to keep all of your seasons together, you should still go through and declutter it at least every 6 months.  Putting it off any longer will only make the task more daunting and your closet more chaotic.  Here are a few tips to get you started.

Purge It-There's nothing better you can do your closet than to get rid of the things in it that you don't need.  When going through your pieces don't ask yourself "Can I still fit into this?"  Instead, ask yourself "Would I choose to wear this over other things in my closet?"  If the answer is no, it's time to say goodbye.  Make a little extra money for the holidays by selling it on eBay or donate it to someone in need.  Don't forget to donate all of your unused hangers too.  Thrift stores are always in need of these.
Organize It- Once you've decided on what things you want to keep, place similar items together. Group your short sleeve shirts together, your long sleeve shirts together, dress pants together, etc.  This will help you see what areas you need to expand your wardrobe and will also help you easily find what you're looking for.
Code It- Color code each group.  Again, this will help you locate items quickly and will give you a better sense of what's in your wardrobe.  You'll never know you have seven black, long sleeve tops until they are all grouped together.
Hang It- Invest in some good hangers.  I have a fondness for felt hangers for a number of reasons.  Your shirts don't slip off of them.  They are thinner than the bulky plastic hangers, freeing up more space in your closet.  They have perfectly rounded edges so your clothes don't get what my sister and I call "pokey holes" at the shoulders.  And best of all these are sold everywhere now, even at Ross and TJ Maxx!  To help your pocketbook, buy a few packs at a time and gradually make the change.  Eventually you'll have a streamlined closet full of matching hangers.

Box It- I'm not a fan of putting my shoes in boxes because I think it takes up too much room, but if that's your thing, make sure you know what's inside.  Purchase some clear plastic shoe boxes to house all of your shoes.  If you don't want to spend that much, you can keep the original boxes and label them so you don't have to pull a Jenga move every time you're looking for a shoe.  Another idea is to get out your camera and takes shots of each pair to hang out the outside of each box so you know exactly what's inside.
Sweat It- Fold up your sweaters and organize them on a shelf by color.  Hanging sweaters will alter and ultimately ruin their shape over time.  Plus you'll free up a lot of space by removing those bulky wools from your hanging bar.
Enjoy it!- When you're all done, you should feel proud and happy.  Enjoy your newly organized wardrobe, and the ease of "shopping" in your closet it will bring you.

Road Trip Revelations

Jon, myself and Remington had a wonderful visit in San Antonio.  We hadn't seen Jon's parents or brother since our wedding, so it was definitely a treat.  Remi was a big hit too :)  We're definitely blessed with loving family and warm and welcome "homes away from home."  We can't wait to go back for another visit in a month.

We were also blessed with a beautiful day to travel on our 9-hour journey back home.  I couldn't help but notice the distinct difference in God's creation as we traveled past the rocky ridges of San Antonio, up through the hill country of central Texas and returned to the sweeping plains of Oklahoma.  We saw quite the sunset on the way home, and it reminded me of one of my current song favorites by The Afters.

"You've opened my eyes so I can see You all around me...You light up the sky to show me that you are with me."

Table Decorating Contest

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Jon and I are leaving to spend a long weekend in San Antonio with his parents and his brother (who will be town from Arizona).  But before we go, I wanted to leave you with some pictures from the Officer Spouses Club Table Decorating Contest that was held last night.

I called Jon on my way home from base, and he immediately asked "How was the contest?" to which I responded "Victorious." The 32nd FTS, our squadron, took first place! The theme was Silver Screen so we decided to focus on famous quotes from each movie genre. Each place setting featured a different movie.

We had a "drive-in" for our center piece where clips of the famous quotes were shown.

Welcome to the Jayhawk Drive-In!

Wizard of Oz place setting. The glass had a button you could turn on to make the water swirl and look like a tornado inside. Also notice the witch's feet sticking out from under the plate :)

A close-up of the yellow brick road I painted.

Silence of the Lambs place setting

Toy Story place setting where we recreated Woody's hat out of the bowl and plate.  Check out the little army men climbing down from the glass.

Scarface place setting

A Christmas Story place setting with the infamous leg lamp made out of a champagne glass.

Close-up of the leg lamp

Star Wars place setting featuring R2-D2's head.

Top Gun place setting. Those planes were attached to a motor and flew around the plate. We used a lot of Jon's gear for this one since he's the lone Navy guy.  This was my seat at the table so my name was featured on the movie cover "Starring Mallory R."

Titanic place setting complete with dry ice under the sinking ship.

The next few images are of some of the other tables in the competition.

The gang minus Helen and Jessica who couldn't be there.  We had a great team and a great time!
