Christmas Trees-Part 2 (Rustic and Coastal)

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Here are my other favorite Christmas tree styles-rustic and coastal (since we're moving to Florida).  Enjoy!

Use tea stained manila tags to create ornaments.  So simple, yet so cute.

This rustic tree has just the right mix of gold, silver and burlap...my faves!  The stockings are adorable too.

Christmas at the beach anyone?  Starfish make the perfect adornments for a coastal holiday.

Coastal blues bring this tree (and these presents) to life in this traditional home.

This tree is full of more starfish and the hydrangeas and chartreuse color palette remind me of my wedding :)

Now to decide which style to use...or perhaps a mix of the styles is in order!  Do you change the theme of your tree every couple of years?

Christmas Trees-Part 1 (Traditional)

Monday, November 28, 2011

Seeing all of my friends' Christmas tree photos popping up on my Facebook news feed has me all excited to decorate for the holidays.  Lately, I've been in love with trees and decor that have a bent toward traditional style.  Here are a few traditionally styled trees I've tucked away in my "Remember This Idea" file.  They all make my heart aflutter.

Martha, O Martha

Friday, November 25, 2011

Your paper cutter has changed my life. Okay that's being little dramatic, maybe just my crafting life, but still. This guy is amazing.

This is the 12" paper cutter from the Martha Stewart Crafts line. They sale them online at various sites and in craft stores (usually around $25). I got mine at Michael's with a 50% off coupon but even if I hadn't had the coupon, it would have been worth the money. I can't tell you how much use I've gotten out of this little guy since purchasing him back in September.

He's got a clear ruler that flips up and down and helps secure your paper while cutting and allows you to measure for the right cut.

He's got an expandable width ruler for your larger pieces.

And he cuts everything so nice and crisp that you can come out with professional looking things like these labels with the perfect amount of white space on each side...

These banners cut straight as an arrow...

These tags...(created from sheets of $1.99 card stock and cut into tag size and hole punched). These would be great on gifts too! Using the board saved me hours of tracing and measuring!

And because I had my trusty paper cutter, I could make my own designs (even using a program as simple as PowerPoint) and then cut them down to look like they were right from the printer! And I didn't have to worry about my hand cramping up from scissors (just slide down that cutting razor), crooked lines (built in walls to use as a guide) or uneven lengths (built in ruler=no pre-measuring on cuts). This tool is a must!

If you're out shopping on this Black Friday, visit a craft store and pick up one of these!  You'll thank me later. :)

Thankgiving Decor

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

It seems everyone is in Christmas mode a little early this year.  But if you're one of the few that is still embracing fall and Thanksgiving, here are a few decorating ideas to make your Thanksgiving gathering even more beautiful.

Personalized Pumpkin Place Setting.  Say that three times fast.  Painted mini pumpkins make the perfect place "cards" for your guests.

Florals and produce centerpiece. Use a head of lettuce or cabbage instead of vases to hold floral arrangements.

Home Decor.  A simple tablescape makes a warm greeting for your guests.

Mantle Decor.  Nothing says fall like feathers and foliage.

Cinnamon Wreath. Mmmm I love the smell of cinnamon.  It's a little treat for my nose everytime I pass one of those cinnamon brooms in the grocery store.  I'm not a big fan of using brooms for decor though, so this is a great solution.  Plus you could use this wreath on into the Christmas season.

Why I love TJ Maxx

Monday, November 21, 2011

Jon and I are on our way to San Antonio to spend Thanksgiving with his parents. We have our fur babies in tow and are all jam packed in my tiny, two-door car. It should make for quite an interesting road trip :)

While we're cruising along the interstate, I thought I'd share some of my recent finds at one of my favorite stores-TJ Maxx. TJ Maxx and HomeGoods are my happy place. I could easily spend hours of time and hundreds of dollars at them every time I go.  My favorite thing about them is that they sale designer style items but at budget-friendly prices.   And because they get new shipments in all of the time, you never know what goodies you'll come across!  Can you hear the excitement in my voice?  Seriously.  Kid in a candy shop=Mallory in TJ Maxx.

We didn't have either of these stores close to us when we lived in Oklahoma, so I've been trying to not go too crazy with visits while I'm here in Alabama.  However, I have taken a few several trips in the past couple of months.  Most recently I was able to snag a few great Christmas decor items at TJ (yes, we're on a first name basis), one of which looks like something right out of the Ballard Designs catalog.

Here is Ballard's version of a driftwood tree.  The medium-sized one (about the size of the one I bought) is $69 buckaroos.

And here is the version I got from TJMaxx for only $29.99.

While it's not exactly the same, I still love it... maybe even more than the BD one.

Sticking with the driftwood theme (we are moving to Florida, right?), I also got this wreath (for $19.99).  I love the hint of sparkle it has.  Perfect for the holidays :)

So what about you?  Are you as crazed about shopping trips to TJ Maxx and HomeGoods as I am?  What great finds have you scored?  Do tell! :)

Vintage Western Couples Shower

Friday, November 18, 2011

Last week I helped host a couples shower for our friends Colin and Maranda who are getting married in January. The overall idea was to create a vintage, western feel perfect for fall.  Maranda initially wanted to have an autumn wedding but the timeline wasn't right, so this was our slight nod to a festive, fall soiree.

Along with my own ideas, I also took to Pinterest (my new drug) and party sites like Hostess with the Mostess to get inspiration.  The largest inspiration was from this party on hwtm.com.  It had so many cute ideas that I had to steal borrow a few of them and add my own little twist to them.  The final outcome led to this:

Here's a front view (everything wasn't quite out yet, but I wanted to show you this angle).

I painted canvas with Colin and Maranda's silhouettes to anchor the center of the table and hung cafe lights (from my wedding) to light the backdrop (a striped bed sheet). Old wooden boxes from my great uncle's barn in Virginia and a spray painted thrift store lantern added to the vignette.  With the exception of the metal baking pan (that belonged to my grandmother) and a tin bucket for the pudding, various white platters were used to hold the food.

We created an illuminating entry to the party with candle lanterns hung from shepherd hooks (that I made and used at my wedding over a year ago-waste not, want not.  Right?) lining both sides of the walkway leading to the doors.

The sign-in table was styled with an antique lantern (belonging to Maranda's parents), a faux stalk of wheat from Michael's craft store, jars of arrangements and a cardboard letter in the initial of Colin and Maranda's new last name.  A gold horseshoe helped anchor the sign-in sheets on this windy night.

The main menu consisted of hamburgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob, mini macaronis, baked beans, potato salad, cowboy dip and chips. Napkins were wrapped in stamped kraft paper napkin rings reading "oh happy day" and "celebrate."
The designed labels for all of the goodies hung them from the table with striped red ribbon.  And don't you just love the individual jars of baked beans?

The dessert menu consisted of strawberry cupcakes, dirt pudding (served with a garden trowel from the Dollar Tree) and brownies adorned with flags boasting the couple's wedding date and "sweet love."

Guests got their drinks at "The Watering Trough" and made sure to personalize the drink tag hanging from their mason jar so we knew what drink belonged to whom.  I initially was going to buy manila tags to use on the drinks, but then opted to make my own (there will be another post on that coming soon).  The same striped paper straws we used at Mer's shower made another appearance (I can't get enough of them).

The rest of the beverages were kept cool in a wheelbarrow outside by the grill, and subsequently, the guys. :)

Canvas material was used throughout the party.  I had yards and yards left over from one of my previous jobs (again, waste not, want not) that I put to good use.  I cut out table runners and stenciled them in Colin and Maranda's initials to place on each table.  I also used the extra canvas fabric and some jute string to make a bunting so guests would know where to place their gifts.  Fall colored flowers were used in all of the floral arrangements and, of course, my willow branches made another appearance as well.

Guests were asked to snap a photo in the cowboy corner complete with an old family quilt of Maranda's, bales of hay, a banner of handkerchiefs and a selection of hats for dress-up.  Me and the hubby made sure to get in on the action :)

And now for the best part...the gifts!  Colin and Maranda got some wonderful goodies (check out those adorable Mr. & Mrs. pillows made by a friend).  And they also got a hysterical number of Crock-Pots...not one, not two, but three! (as Colin so appropriately shows in one of the pictures below).

The shower was a great time for all, and the bride and groom were so appreciative of everyone who contributed to the evening.  They made sure to tell us just how much they loved the outcome and all of our hard work, which made it even more of a success in my book!

Congratulations, you guys!  We're very happy for you and can't wait for the wedding!

DEAL ALERT-RIGGERS TOOL BAG!

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

I first discovered the Riggers tool bag when I was browsing stylist, Heather Bullard's website.  I first made mention of this bag back in August, and now that I own one myself, I can really give testament to its greatness.

What's so great about this bag?  Two things stand out to me: its durability and all of its little pockets lining the outside.  It easily stands up on its own without toppling over and is perfect for placing all of the last minute tools you made need when working on a project/party setup.

My bag arrived the day of my sister's baby shower, and I've used it on several occasions since then.  When thinking of purchasing it, I looked at several sites and found that Harbor Freight Tools was by far the cheapest retailer.  I got mine with a 20% off coupon for $11.99 which is a steal in itself, but HFT has made the price even better for today only!  They are having a huge 15-hour sale and if you get the bag today it is only $8.99 (plus shipping)!  This is a wonderful deal!  Sears is selling a very similar Riggers bag for about 6 times this price.

This would make a great gift for the crafter in your family...or for yourself!  Remember today only is the 15-hour sale at this price!  Happy shopping!
